Why was the main issue being put on the table that MINORITIES could not afford it ? Why is this an issue. Its a paid programing it isnt free, If they cant afford it the radio is free they can access that.

I think the merger is a good thing. If they dont allow the merger the cost per month will just go up. Then how will they afford it. I have both services so It would just be more user friendly.

I listened to the debates on Cable and all i kept hearing are the senators that were worried about the minorities not being able to afford it. the price will go up either way so I dont understand what it matters, and its not a subscription you HAVE to buy.... its a choice, there are only 2 companies now that carry it, It would make the subscribers like me that buy both, beable to access all chanells thru one.

And honestly how many that listen to these service daily will still keep it if it raises in price. I will. Everything raises in price and we accept it, like gas, food, heating costs. Those we DONT have a choice on , On our listening choice we chose FREE or subscription.

It has less to do with minorities not being able to afford it, and more to do with monopolizing rural markets (i.e. which is a contention of the FCC, currently stalling merger plans). Yet even if the FCC accedes to the merger, there is the still the NAB to answer to.

Remember, it was the NAB which stood in the way of satellite broadcasting being classified as disparate from traditional radio in the beginning - and that was when there were two insignificant companies. With one single company dominating the stratosphere, do you think they are going to suddenly just acquiesce quietly?

Even assuming everything is golden, and through some sort of divine intervention the merger is approved and adopted. . .The only thing those two companies have in common is their bandwidth and frequency generation. Buisness tactics are as different as night and day, though both have shown to be equally ineffectual, encryption and modulation, datastream variants and codecs. . .Reaching a point of standardization between the two companies would be a logistical nightmare. And expensive. Either they would be forced to retrofit all existing systems to a universal standard, or maintain two varied systems limiting over all public appeal.

In any case, the merger is highly unlikely anyway. Neither company is generating enough profit revenue to cover the costs such a union would necessitate - which means that the subscribers will end up footing the bill through higher rates, which is just one of many strikes against the whole idea.
