I wouldnt buy a brand name desktop.
Get a friend or local pc shop to build you a whitebox (no brand) pc. you will get better value, and better performance

That's like asking everyone here which breakfast cereal they recommend...lol.
Based on my own experience, with a Dell Dimension 4400 that I've had since early 2002...get a DELL.
I've never had a problem with the computer or it's hardware...I was easily able to upgrade it's memory myself and it's basically been running 24/7 with just the normal reboots as required.
Even though you say it's for "basic things"...
1) get plenty of memory (RAM) as much as you can afford.
2) get a good sized Harddrive (80GB or more)
3) get a fast Video Card.
I will buy another Dell for my next desktop.

I would stay away from name brand such as HP or Sony...especially HP though. I would suggest building one over buying prebuilt. Not only are they more reliable and faster, but you actually know what is inside. You add whatever you want, not what they want. Not only that, but some have programs that act as spyware. I ran a spyware program as soon as I started my parents HP, it had never been online, and it had over 70 spyware pre installed. Of course I deleted them, but then half the programs didnt work. Then, when I went online...about 100 things popped up wanting to access the internet/trusted zone/act as a server...etc. It was insane. So, build your own, either build one from scratch or find one you like and buy the parts so you know their compatible.
If you do go with a name brand, stay away from Emachines, HP, Dell, Compaq, or off the wall brands. The only complaint I have with Sony is you have to download drivers everytime you redo windows, and it comes pre installed with lots of sony stuff. But, a fresh install of windows will cure that. The 4 companies Listed usually put crappy parts in, unless its an expensive computer.
You could also have one built someplace like. www.xoticpc.com or something. Its a little more money, but theres nothing crappy installed. You pick the hardware and OS.

HP is the world leader in computer sales right now because Dell has been having a lot of problems. I have an HP laptop and it's the best computer I've ever used.

Dell. Quick and easy to order, reasonable to cheap prices for good quality, and no problems experience with the actual hardware. I've had one laptop and one desktop, no problems with either other than normal PC problems but this is just software stuff that you will get with any PC

Any of the PC's sold by NOVATECH are good value and good qulity.. ask the salesperson what would be good for your needs. Ie toop end gamer, word processing and internet surfing ..... they will advise you free of charge and dont go for the 'most expensive'.
