It depends where you live, but you will have to contact the Social Security office and will have to go down there and fill out a form, show them marriage license and/or other ID.
You do NOT have to contact a laywer to change your name.
You also should get your driver's license name changed. Call them or look up your Sec. of State website and see what you need to change the name.
Then just start using that new name. Change your credit cards, change your name with your bank. Notify your post office of the name change. Change your name with your Dr. offices, employer...
It's not hard.

Take your marriage license, birth certificate and some form of ID to the social security office and then to the DMV. Best call first to the social security office and make sure what you need to bring. You don't need any lawyers or legal advice.

You will have to go down town to your local courthouse. Seek the answer to your question through the local probate court clerks. They will lead you to the correct procedure in your area of the country. That is USA of course. If foreign from that you will have to use the legal process for that particular country. Good Luck. You may even have to hire a lawyer in the matter but maybe not.

You do not have to change your name just because you married someone. If you feel you need to or really want to change your name you need to contact the Social Security office and go to the drivers license office. You will need your birth certificate, social security card, photo ID, and marriage license. You might want to call those offices to make sure thats all they need.

Well, depending on the state. In Texas we have to have a marriage license, and when we get married the preacher or priest,or judge signs the marriage license after the wedding and sends it to the court house and it's mailed back to us with the womans legal name change.

In the USA I took my marriage papers to Social Security office, Motor Vehicle Dept etc. and they made the change. My 2nd marriage took place in Canada and I had to go to the Provencial Office and pay a fee to have it changed.
