My baby, now 6 months old, was nursing about 10 times a day until he turned 5 months old. I then started rice cereal & he still nursed about 9 times a day. I added fruits, but no change. In the past week, he has started to increase solids & not nurse much at all- 3 or 4 times a day! I did, however, cut out the 4 night feeds (without much objection from him... yay sleep!)
Here is his schedule- is it normal??
9 am- nurse
11 am- 1 jar of baby food
3:00 (sometimes later)- nurse again
6:00 1 jar baby food for dinner (he eats all of it)
7:30- nurse
8:30- 1/2 cup of rice cereal with 3-4 ounces of Breastmilk
9:00- nurse a little before bed
Then he wakes at 3 (this is only day # 3 of no feeding at night) and he gets his pacifier, falls back to sleep until 6:00 and nurses only a tiny bit. He eats a lot at 9 though.
Does this seem ok? I worry about him getting enough BM. (I try to nurse more often but he refuses) He will take a sippy cup though- should I add more here?

This is perfectly normal. He will start to get nutrients and calories from the solid food as he eats more and more of it. Way to go on cutting out the night time feedings. You will get to experience feeling rested again. You could try to get him on a breakfast - lunch - dinner schedule with his solids and nurse in between & before bedtime if you wanted, but if things are running smooth I wouldn't mess with it. You may notice a drop in your milk supply since he is nursing less often. This happened to me and I just pumped a little extra to keep it up.

GREAT JOB MOM!!! Looks like you're doing a wonderful job. Baby doesn't want to nurse as much because he's not such a baby anymore. He's filling himself up on the solids and when he does nurse he's drinking more and doesn't need it as often!! Don't doubt yourself, he's eating, sleeping, and having dirty diapers right?

Remember, like I said, as they get older - even if you were to be nursing only - they'd get more out of each visit to the breast and nurse less often. No need to add more nursing visits. I think you are doing a great job and should be commended.

Sounds just fine. Some of those 10 feeds per day were night feedings & now that he is eating solids he doesn't require those. Happy feeding times!

Your baby is right on tract it sounds like. It is normal for a infant to decrease nursing when started on solid foods. He is sleeping through to night, that shows he is not hungry or he would not sleep at night. If he is using a sippy cup you can start weaning him off of breast feeding if you chose.

yup you have a healthy normal baby. Solid foods last in the belly alot longer then breastmilk that's why people usually resort to formula it's heavier so the child doesn't need to be fed as often resulting in sleep for the sleep deprived.

Sound like you are doing a good job. My daughter is a formula baby but eats very similar to what you have explained except she sleeps the whole night. He will let you know if he needs more to eat.

Good luck

Of course he is breastfeeding less, He is getting full on the solid foods. Or were you expecting to breasfeed him through to adulthood?
