Caterpillars have brains the size of the head of a pin. Just enough brain matter there to move, eat, metamorph, reproduce, and die. Nature, however, is probably not surprised since it had the mavelous imagination to make it happen in the first place, and the beautiful taste to save reproduction for when the ex-caterpillars are sipping nectar, flying from flower to flower.

Only the human species has the capability to think and reason . Too bad we humans can't lower ourselves to appreciate the beauty of the caterpillar or butterfly as they struggle through their life cycle.

I think so.It's kinda in them from the day they're born.Sometimes I believe certain things are born to know they're purpose and butterflies are one of them. For example, you have some insects that are born to breed and then they die.Or a male praying mantis know if they mate with a female it's a high probability they are going to get they're heads bit off. It's nature.

Maybe some do...i don't think so though...but I just found out a few weeks ago that butterflies only live for a day! Which really squashes my "butterfly pet" dream...

I'd think that they would. They've probably seen other caterpillars turn into butterflies. And they'll defiantly know when they're in their chrysalis stage....
Maybe we should try to ask them....

They plan for it of course. My pet butterfly is in a cocoon right now because of winter, said he'd see me in the summer.

I think they know because why else would they eat so much and prepare to go into a cocoon? Plus its a part of nature, animals, insects etc do certain things and they know WHY they do them even if we dont!
