we are renting a car and wish to book the ferry from dover to france not sure we can book ahead because you need car reg and we wont know that till the day we pick the car up can we just turn up on the day and get on? any help please

you can definatley do the ferry without booking....
as i did it on the way back from france mid september last year.
on the way out we pre booked our crossing and way back we just turned up at calais and they let us on the next boat.
price was about the same for both journeys
there are plenty of ferries from dover to calais so you shouldnt have any problem with availabilty
do not fill up on petrol as soon as you get to france..... as you will find that if you wait till you get a bit further away from the ferry it gets quite alot cheaper

You don't need to book ahead - get your tickets at Dover. Do make sure you can take your rental car to France, though - some companies frown on it. If allowed, you will absolutely have to get a "green card" which is a special fully-comprehensive insurance for driving outside of the UK. You can get this from the car rental company.

I'm not sure you can but what I know is you can actually book ahead for a rental car. Just enter 'Rental Car' in the Vehicle Registration fields and expected size of car e.g. small, regular, mpv etc. in the Make/Model fields.
