Dissection is the cutting into a body (corpse) -- human or nonhuman -- for the purpose of studying it or analyzing it. Autopsies or necropsies are examples of dissection. Scientists perform dissections in order to view the anatomy of the subject, discover the cause of death, or to learn about the course of a fatal disease or the lethal damage inflicted by an accident. Students do dissections most often to learn the anatomy of their subject; in medical school the prospective doctors dissect cadavers to enhance their understanding of the human anatomy. They perform very detailed dissections of the many systems of the body (e.g., the circulatory, nervous, digestive, and respiratory systems).

What it is in my words: Dissection means to cut an organism, like a frog, open and examining the internal structure, organs, ect.

Why scientists dissect: If there is a new species of animal found, scientists would need to find out how its digestive system works, what the organs look like on the inside, how thick the skin/fur is, and they usually discover interesting facts about them as well, like if there was an organ that only held venom.

Why science students dissect: We dissect in school because our teachers want us to know how the body of a frog, fish, cricket, and so on works. Since we study atoms, molecules, DNA, cells, cell parts, it's interesting to finally see them at work...or how they USED to be at work.

If you're working in a group, I would suggest just going and offering to do the writing or other work required. But if you each get a part to dissect, I would definitely talk to the teacher and ask for an alternative. Many states have laws giving students the right to refuse to dissect. If you state doesn't, still talk to your teacher. I doubt the school wants to be on the news because they forced a kid to cut open a dead animal.

In short, a dissection is carefully cutting open an animal and studying its organs and insides. Scientists perform disections to observe and learn how the animal's organs work. Science students perform dissections for the same reasons.
