I've just about got my right and left splits, I just have to keep practicing keeping my hips square and holding it for longer than 15 seconds. But I've also been practicing sliding down into them without using my hands to catch myself. What is the proper way to do this? Can anyone help me out?

depends, at dancing i don't use my hands and just use the strength in my legs which i think is a better more neater way to do them but others like to use their hands. The proper way to get into splits is to start with both legs together and evenly split meaning don't just let your front leg go down have them both go together at the same time.

i guess all depends on what you are trying to be proper for..

for cheer you would go from standing, feet together, to squated, feet together arms on either side for balance, then shoot legs out without taking hands off the floor.

but if you mean for dance.. it all depens on what you're doing.

gymnastics.. i have no idea, i would assume like cheer.. but.. then same question. obvisouly if your splits are a landing, you wouldn't stop what you were doing to stand still.

Put two sturdy chairs with the seats facing in on either side of your person. You can use their support as needed.
