I recently purchased an aquaclear submersible water heater for my turtle tank. How can I prevent the turtle from going near and/or touching it and hurting himself? Thank you.

There are heater guards that keep the animals from being able to get in contact with a heater: http://www.thatpetplace.com/pet/product/advancedSearch.web;jsessionid=Frvpvf2vHSJny8g9p0lV4nwcvlPzw8wTcpCM1pyS97cjM3ytTn2m!-1279969038!-997673810?command=Search&searchParams.webCategoryKey=245&searchParams.keywords=heater%20guard&searchParams.size=10#resultBody

It shouldn't be too hot for him to touch briefly, but you need to keep him from banging the heater against the side of the tank and shattering the glass.

You can get one of those Barriers that go around the heater and keep the fish/turtles away from it. Other than that make sure he do'n break the glass by wrapping it around with some foam- it doesn't interfere with the heat and protects the turtle and the glass.
