You can assume they want to come in, but not that they are safe to let in. A lot of people use the guize of needing help and knocking on people's doors to gain entry then they rob, or worse the home they were allowed entry into. Of course not all people knocking are bad, you just have to be careful of whom you answer the door for.

if it was my front door i would assume they had something to ask i dont let random people in but if it was my bedroom door then yeah but my mom just opens it and comes in...so if they knock and dont throw the door open i can say go away

Pretty much yeah, but i can always see them at the door before they get a chance to knock it, so i can tell who to open it to or to let them stand in the rain!

excellent question, as the person is knocking on your door i would assume they have no right of entry ergo they would be percieved as a threat i wouldnt give free entry to them. i wouldnt open the door to anyone untill they validated themselves. that includes my own mother.
