Nope. My grandparents had a successful business for 20+ years. Neither of them had a degree, they just had the drive to work hard and learn what they needed to learn while in business.

They sold the business last year when my grandfather's health began to fail.

I think it's all in what you are willing to do to make it successful.

For the majority of business - no you do not need a 4 year degree.

But if you are planning to start a mental health clinic, and you yourself do not have the credentials, you will probably never break ground.

The one thing you do need to have is a business plan. You need to think through all of the sales, marketing, and logistics before you start any type of business, or you may run into problems later that get magnified by not having prepared in the beginning.

I recommend the book Business Plan Kits For Dummies and Rich Dad's Advisors®: The ABC's of Writing Winning Business Plans: How to Prepare a Business Plan That Others Will Want to Read -- and Invest In

Good luck!

There is not such requirement by the government that you have a degree in order to start a business if that's what you're asking. If you have a good enough of an idea and know what you're doing then go ahead and start earning money. The only way a degree would help is in the eyes of potential investors or lenders. It would make you look more qualified and make them more likely to give you money to get your business up and going.

No, what you need is the ability to plan and organize your business, the drive to make it successful, and the ability to keep adequate records. Some of these skills can be developed in school, but there are many successful businesses started and run by people without a degree.

Good luck....

Check with your local county clerk to get a DBA - "doing business as". Depending on your area or what type of business...you might need to find out about charging tax. Your county clerk's office can give you all the details! Good luck!!!!!
