or any other keyboard with or without the USB on my son's computer yet any other computer we try the keyboards on work just fine. Windows loads up properly and the mouse works fine but the problem arises when we need to type in passwords to get onto the user accounts at which point I am sure we could do a system restore or see if there is another problem etc.
Any input on how to fix this problem without going into a computer shop $$$ would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

First lesson learned....Always keep a general account on without a password....just incase!!!

Drivers could be missing on the PC?

Sounds like the keyboard has some functionality so I don't think the driver is missing.Have you checked what keybosrd your PC is set up for? It could be something silly like it was set up for a US keyboard when windows was installed and yours is UK.
Go into control panel and select device manager, keyboards, drivers. You can sart by downloading from the internet the correct driver update. Also use the troubleshooting help to determine the problem.
Failing that a new keyboard is cheap - only £10 - £20

Good Luck
