Given the broadness of your question and not defining whether or not the helper is compensated (with money or by services rendered) for such help, I will presume (because I never ASSUME) that you mean one who helps others out of the kindness of their hearts with no expectation of remuneration, so the answer would be altruist, benefactor or hero/heroine.

Do you know what a thesaurus is? It is a book filled with words that can be subsituted for other words. Sometimes you can pinpoint the exact word to express a thought by using a thesaurus.
Here is a link below. Anytime you need to do this again, just plug the word into the search bar and it will broaden your vocabulary as well as improve your creative writing skils.
I read Roget's Thesaurus as a kid. It was one of my favorite books.

The correct word would be "BENEFACTOR". An assistant or a helper can be employed. A philantropist only gives financial aid. But a BENEFACTOR voluntarily helps in any manner he can.
