I got into a discussion with a relative. She said that allowing gay marriage would open the door to polygamy and incest because if gays deserve the privaledge of marriage then everyone should. I don't understand what gay marriage has to do with polygamy.

Your relative's way of thinking is inherently flawed and discriminatory. Discriminatory in that one whole segment of the population is forbidden from marrying the one they love and, therefore, not being able to fully participate in American society.

Flawed in that comparing same sex marriage to incest and polygamy is like comparing apples and oranges.

This is a weak argument at best that is a sign of the desperate measures the christian right has had to go to in order to scare average people into fearing gay marriage.

The very reason our nation has such a massive and well developed legislative system is so we can make laws that allow some things and outlaw other things - and even if gay marriage is permitted, we can still outlaw polygamy. They are fighting the wrong fight if they really care about polygamy and incest.

Gay marriage has nothign to do with those things. Its a fear tactic that is used by fundamentalists who have no real legal arguments to stand on. The issue comes down to Equal Protection under law, as provided under the 14th Amendment. The state has no compelling interest to discriminate against gays in regards to marriage. However, there are compelling interests to prohibit incest and polygamy.

My brain's not exactly running on all cylinders, but:
--Polygamy usually translates to that the women are getting a raw deal.
--Incest is pretty risky. There have been cases of deseases caused because of this (from royalty to rednecks)
--Gay marriage is, when you get right down to it, not that different from heterosexual marriage.
I'm sure someone can answer this better (and worse) than me.

I don't see what's wrong with any of those.
