Models need to be so skinny because that is what is expected and demanded in the industry. Anorexia and bullemia are very common. However, in Spain, and expected in other major fashion countries soon, they have set up rules. One rule is that if you are 5' 10" and do not weigh at least 110 llbs., you cannot model. Although this still seems very skinny, more than 60% models got cut.

a lot of people have really loaded emotions about this, but the facts are simple:
1) the camera truly does put on 10 lbs. If you look good in real life and you weight 135, you've got to weight 125 if you want to look the same in print.
2) fashion designers cut their runway samples to a certain, very limited, range of sizes, and in most cases they're not going to change that just to accommodate a model that wears a size 10. lots and lots and lots of girls want to be models, it's a lot easier for them to find someone who fits the dress than fit the dress to the girl.
3) "looks" go in and out; a lot of people love to complain that fashion models are to thin these days but guess what, thin is "in", so when that changes the size of the models will change. the fashion industry is in the business of selling clothes, not catering to political correctness. when skinny models stop selling clothing then fashion designers will stop using them, not before.

Models, mostly runway models, need to be very thin so the clothes hang properly on them. This sounds bad, but they are closer to clothes hangers then larger women. Designers don't want too many curves to distort the the line and form of the clothing. They are just better displayed on very thin women because their body shape doesn't add or take away from the clothing. It's not just some evil conspiracy to make women think they are fat, it's just common sense.

because they have to be able to fit in all of the clothing that the people make for them. I don't know why people who aren't skinny can't be models.

They look best when they are really skinny. Only the best looking thinnest models are the good ones. Besides, I'm skinny too, so I don't mind at all...as long as being skinny doesn't hurt your health

Because the majority of high fashion designers think that their designs look best on woman and little girls who are 6 feet tall and pencil thin. Other designers however are trying to get away from that and show naturaly looking women in their designs, or show women who have curves.

i really don't know, and it kind of annoys me. it's like, if your "fat" or even the slightest flab is showing, you'd definetly be out of place if you were a model. retarted stuff...
