Because I've seen the economy cycle through recessions a couple of times and I know people who retired and got scammed out of their money by crooked investments and failed banks, not to mention standing in a line that wrapped around a building for a few dollars of unemployment insurance when I was a working college student....and being asked for 40$ cash for 50$ of food stamps just to make sure no dollar went to an "undeserving" poor person.

The government is the only entity capable of providing a safety net to our elderly and others who are not capable of self support And at times it gets so rigidly tight that the poor can't get the help that was set up for them. (Kinda like our injured veterans are going through today) It's as if the agencies are protecting the money from the needy instead of protecting the people from poverty.

The cry of 'personal responsibility' by those too young and ignorant to see HOW people get to a point where they can't support themselves makes me sick.

And hearing politicians aim to put "tax dollars back in my pocket" just makes me think of the payday-loan and other scam artists who are free with money up front, and silently piling up debt in the background to be paid later.

For one, look at the mess the Conservatives have made of this nation the last six years...And all they do is bash other people, instead of coming up with a coherent plan to change things.

Secondly, I believe in a division of church and State. We criticize Iran and Iraq as being Muslim States; we are a Christian State. Under Bush, we are an Evangelical Christian State.

Third, I am a fourth generation Democrat. I have not found a reason to change my ideology or party since I first started voting.

Although it has been stated that the difference between a Democrat and a Republican is about $100,000 a year; and that a Republican will very quickly become a Democrat once his son is busted for drug possession; there are certain core ideologies identified with the Democratic Party that I cannot turn my back on, such as the need for medical treatment being available to all people in this country, regardless of race, religion, national origin, sexual preference and immigration status.

Because I think we are doing a lousy job of taking care of OUR citizens and I want to see the pattern stopped. I think that it is disgraceful that the "greatest country in the world" has millions who have no health care, has men and women who once defended this nation sleeping in the streets, and children who go without food. All of the money being spent on this useless war could be going towards taking care of our citizens and I don't mean in terms of handouts. I would like to see more job training and apprenticeship programs to help everyone be competitive in the quest for employment. I would like to see more money spent on education so that as the baby boomers go into retirement, we have qualified people to take their place and care for them.
I also don't like to see the Government dictate to people what is morally right and wrong. There is a separation between church and state. If gay people want to marry then let them do it. The Bible says it is an "abomination" but these are grown folks. It is they who have to account for this alleged sin, not the rest of us.
I guess I am a Liberal because I care about people and I care about this land. If we do a good job taking care of people as opposed to making the rich richer and the poor poorer everything takes care of itself. Besides I think the Bible says something like "Whatsoever you do to the least of my bretheren that you shall do unto me". It is NOT because my parents are still supporting me. I am married and live thousands of miles away from my mother. Both my wife and I work for a living.

I am not a liberal, first off. I am not even so much pro-democrat as I am apalled and disgusted with republicans, because of all the obvious reasons:
- Lies (WMD)
- Hypocrisy: banning gay marriages but having sex with pages & priests
- Christian fundamentalism (abortion, education, evolution, mixing church with state)
- Racism (treatment of the Katrina victims & momma Bush remarks)
- Greed and selfishness (It's OK if the future generations die of global warming, as long as we can make an extra buck now).
- Plain obtuse fascist ideas of Rush, Ann Coulter and the like, and the republicans' failure to distance themselves from such idiots.
- Illiteracy and lack of education & common sense (put food on your family, misunderestimated, fool me twice - can't fool me again... and don't tell me about Yale - someone who wrote his own papers would speak much, much better English.)
- Corruption & treason (Abramoff; outing agents)

Want some more? Plenty where this came from.... and republicans are not tryong to stop.

Simple. Because I believe that liberty is essential. I believe in freedom of thought for individuals, limitations on government power, and respect for the rule of law.
