Yes it is OK to use 1/2 inch... I agree that if you haven't already bought it to go ahead with the duo-rock concrete backer...it only comes in 1/2 inch that I know of. If you already have the hardibacker then by all means use it. As a matter of fact it will work better with your ceramic edge caps, they are made to be used over 1/2 inch base material. Don't let anyone tell you that it won't work for shower/ tub walls because it will. Good luck with your project!!!

The durarock bigg dogg refers to is also known as cement board. If you're doing a new tub/shower area or redoing an old one, use this stuff at least half way up the shower wall. It's usually 1/2" and heavy, cuts with an abrasive wheel and hole saw, but once it's up it's up. It's inpervious to moisture or water or whatever may eventually wind up behind the outer skin, tile or surround.

You can use 1/2 inch...it will just come out farther at and the base of the tub and around any doorway or window casing..and of course it's heavier....unless you have already bought it, I would use 1/4" ....I I have installed a lot of tile.

yes u can use 1/2 but i wouldnt if u r doing a shower wall.....use duro-rock and coat the seams......
