So when you go to the movie store, what sort of movies are you looking for? What genres should I stock the most? Drama? Action? Chick flicks? Comedy? Childrens? Family? Hot new releases?

Also, any ideas for a good, unique name? Thanks for your help!

New release rentals make up about 75-80% of your rental business, so that should be your #1 focus. Having a large family section is good, too. That way parents can get something for the rugrats while they watch more adult fare. Sadly, cool sections like foreign, independent, and anime really don't rent that well. Of course, all this varies with location also. For example, a store across from a college should have different movies than one next to a church.
What the first guy said is very valid, also

I would think twice before opening a store in your field of interest, its a little like opening a hardware store down the street from home depot and lowes, it would'nt make sense. This is not an expanding retail activity, and the super stores are grabbing the prime locations, twenty years ago this would have worked, but today, a major question mark, and If I were a bank manager or loan company, I would want to know the potential market, before laying out serious capital in a business that would be iffy at best, put your thinking cap on elsewhere towards an expanding activity, where there is room to grow, and If you believe my critique, check it out with professional marketers who are more able to apraise the business potential.

My advice: Ignore the movies you love, and go for the biggest hits and current favorites according to the current records of most rented titles.
These will no doubt be the most violent, ignorant and stupid movies currently available, directed by hacks and starring air-headed teen idols.

You can get some classics and foreign films, but keep them to a minimum. Teenagers today wouldn't know "Citizen Kane" from candy cane.

Remember: The whole world doesn't have your taste or interests.

As someone once said: "The sure way for a shoe store to fail is to only carry the shoe size of the owner!"

You should have all genres in stock. Everyone has different tastes. I'd recommend stocking old movies that are now out on DVD. There are young audiences interested in seeing them.
As for a name:
Reel Movies
Movies 'R' Us
Movie Lovers Inc.
Family Flicks
