They can easily stay underwater 20 to 30 minutes and they can stay under from between 1-8 hours if necessary and conditions are right (they prepare slowly for those long periods, slowing heart beat, temperature, etc.)

It all depends on size and activity level. A sleeping hatchling will pop up for a breath (reflexive action, kinda like watching a slow pendulum) about every 5 minutes. 10 - 12 feet three hours easy if they're not moving around. Lower temperatures mean slower metabolism... so when it's cold out, expect to wait longer for the nose to come back up. Alligators are able to slow their heart rate down to a beat or two per minute and restrict blood flow to vital organs... this allows for the ability to hold their breath for these long amounts of time.

Edited to add.....
Byderule, if you had 5 baby alligators, and any reason to own them, you'd know that the only reason alligators eat rotting meat is because they get something larger than they can finish in one meal or tear apart while fresh, so they stuff the leftovers somewhere they can marinate for a while to make it -easier- to eat, they actually -prefer- fresh meat just like any other animal at the top of the food chain. I certainly hope you're a) not considering wild alligators to be your pets or b) feeding your ~legally~ (I hope) kept alligator food that you would not be willing to put on the grill and eat yourself.

about 20 minutes
they need a place in the sun to digest the rotten food they like ,
they need a wet place to lay in wait for pray and to hide from danger ,
and they need shade to relax
i got 5 baby aligators
and if they do not have these three environments ,they will die in the end

and at night they are mostly in the water ,during the day they are half of the time sun bathing and the rest hiding under the plants .

Around two hours if resting, less if active.
