When in London my usual goal is to stay off the beaten path and avoid the overly touristy areas. When you do this you start to experience "real" London and what it's like to be a local. I believe most areas south of the Thames are underrated and deserve a visit. The Clapham area in zone 2 is nice and I stumbled upon a great little theatre pub near the Clapham North tube station, sorry I don't remember the name!
In addition to the South of the city I enjoy Greenwich. Yes, to some this is still a tourist area, but I think you get away from the American tourists and people who are trying to see London frantically in a short time, those folks won't leave zone 1. Greenwich is absolutely beautiful, has some lovely markets and wonderful places to eat. It's also easily accessible by the Docklands Light Rail.

My husband and I went to London on our honeymoon and one of our favorite memories was driving just outside of London, stopping at a pub that was down some deserted, dark alley and chatting it up with the locals. Being from the USA and having been treated very rudely anywhere in London, we were really surprised at how welcome they made us feel, refused to let us pay for our dinner or drinks and would not accept us buying a round for the house in gratitude. The owner kept the place open about 2 hours after closing just so people could stay and chat with us. We learned so much from them and never laughed so hard in our lives at the jokes and stories they told. And the songs they sang! It was our most enjoyable night of the entire two week stay. Anywhere we've ever travelled, we've always found going off the beaten path and hanging with the locals the most fun, interesting and enjoyable times. There have been a few scares, but for the most part we've never feared for our safety.

I like to visit the old open air markets like Petticoat Lane. They are fun, offer a lot of good deals and its an easy way to feel more like a local and less like a tourist.
