Tradition and Technology.
The round plates were develeped by potters around the start of civilization and have since been our means of eating. Pompeii, Italy has many examples of old roman dishware, which are all round.
If you go to a sushi restaraunt they will most likely give your teriaki platter on some kind of square plate, but these are reletively new ideas, because Plates were made by potters, who made pots, which the most logical way to make something to eat off of would be to spin it on a potters wheel.
Imagine how difficult it would be to make a square dish back in the middle ages. Sure you could make a flat block to eat off of, but you need some kind of concaveness to the surface to keep juices from running off onto your clothes. Hence the semi-concave plate.

because square dinner plates are a symbol of fine dining since many fancy restaurants serve on square plates and round plates are more casually oriented.

what's a rectangular shaped like - and don't say a rectangular! Dinner plates are around because of the fact a protracted time in the past, the around monster got here and stepped on something no longer around. as hence the around monster, the international isn't a cube and hence it incredibly is lots much less complicated.

Now that you mention it.... if they were square they would store better - wouldn't they? On the other hand, they would chip easier, and as the others already said, they are easier to make when they are round.

Cause they fit in cupboards better? That's my thought but I don't know for sure and I kind of like eating on a square dish.
