Why? Because some of those who reply to questions misspelled or gramatically wrong are full of themselves. They are answering questions on this site not to benefit those in this world who ask for help, but to help themselves. Something is missing in their lives, with that void being fulfilled by belittling and judging those who are below their presumptive status. Watch how they attack and accuse those
who will besmirch their chosen field.
What does it accomplish? it fulfills the need to feel and look important.'' Look at me!I have 1 Billion points on Yahoo Answers, and you cannot spell english you urchin scum! how dare you enter my realm!!"
How about this question...WHO CARES? Those of us who want to "Answer" questions will. Those who want to "Assume" and
"Beliitle" will. The rest, well, they're going to Hell i tell you, Hell!!
LOL---Im just teasin guys.....Does it really Matter? is answering this Question gonna bring my Nephew Home from Iraq any Sooner? No.....

Such a silly question and silly placement.
Do you go to the library and ask why books are there?
Why would you go to words and wordplay (where the pedantic word-lovers dwell) and ask why we're pedantic about spelling and grammar?
It's like going to a biology topic and ask why biology is so biological; or why math is so mathematical.
Anyway, it is obvious that not everyone is pedantic about grammar. At least it gives those of us who are (pedantic) something to do.
Have you ever heard "form follows function"? Or "the three most important things about real estate are location location location" ? If you combine those two concepts and think a little bit, you'll realize that everyone--even the pedantic ones--are not on their best text all of the time. Instant messages and internet posts don't always rate the highest degree of correctness.
And yet, some grammarians are so obsessively full of themselves (ourselves?) that they (we?) rant on about their (our?) own high standards of correctness. I personally know some of them who do this with an eye to marketing themselves, as if every instance of putting pen to paper is a highly publicized commercial advertising their skills to potential customers.
I'm a teacher and an editor, and I freely admit there are far too many instances when I need to hang my head where grammar is concerned. I am the typo queen. It happens. I dot my "t"s and cross my "i"s along with the best of them, and still get the big bucks.
If I didn't at least make an effort to be mostly correct most of the time, how could I summon up the nerve to tell other people how to punctuate?
So why are those who try to come up with legitimate answers pedantic? Because people who live in glass houses shouldn't throw stones. Being correct is one way to ward off those stones.
Conversely, those of you who churn out stupid answers without consideration, do you realize how pathetic and ignorant you seem? And for those of you who concoct goofy pseudo non-questions, like "Do rats like cheese?" how bright do you think you look?
What does good grammar accomplish? How you express yourself reflects who you are. How sad it must be if one is unable to accurately communicate ones own voice.
Words mean something.

I see you have got a lot of answers already, so I just like to add something: some people at Y!A are not English speakers as native language. I am one of them, though I do not correct anybody else's grammar, I really appreciate when someone does correct me.
I see it as help, maybe now you don't believe it, but later in life you will find out how useful it is to have a well spoken/written language, if you want to go far and succeed in life (even you will be judge according to the way you use your language).

Not to be pedantic, but you're question is not complete. I am sure you meant to ask "Why are people on this site so pedantic about even the smallest spelling and grammar ERRORS?" Then of course, you're question is not grammatically correct so what you really needed to ask is, "Why are people on this site so pedantic about even the smallest spelling and GRAMMATICAL ERRORS?"

I was a manager in a major pharmacy retailer, now a manager in the financial industry. If you can't spell or use correct grammar on your job application, I'm not going to call you for an interview!

I just consider it part of the "answers." I'm sharing information. Perhaps the person doesn't know their spelling or grammar is incorrect.
And it may not seem like it now, but later on in life, you're going to be judged by how you speak and write. Best to get it right early on.

We're all pedants at heart. Plus, poor spelling and/or grammar grates on our nerves, much like out-of-key singing.

Good spelling and grammar skills once upon a time belied education and intelligence. Some of us remember those days.
One could also do long division, multiplication and add or subtract without the use of calculators.
I still amaze co-workers with the ability do all of the above.
