I live in a very new subdivision area... we've got the only house in it, the rest is lots (which is all habitat for different animals). Lately deer have been coming very up close, on our porch, in my gardens ... apparently hungry.. what can I put out for them??

I thought maybe small leftovers.. but they didn't take..and I have to go back outside and pick it up.

What do deer eat in the winter? Or what can I set out for them??

Ecologically speaking, it's a really bad idea to feed wild animals. They become dependant upon humans and then lose their ability to feed in the wild. They also become rather aggressive towards other members of their species as well as humans. I know there's not much chance of you stopping your feeding regime if you've just moved in, but you need to consider the deer's welfare if their new and regular food supply was suddenly cut off.

Rather than thinking about how it affects you and seeing the deer as "hungry", see the animal as a visitor from another place and appreciate from a distance.

As an example of what a happen if we feed animals, in my country (Australia) some species of kangaroos are developing a terrible disease called "lumpy jaw". This is a calcified growth which occurs on their lower jaws and is caused from consumption of sugars and carbohydrates (i.e. bread), which they don't eat in the wild. They end up dying a really slow and incredibly painful death from starvation, because we humans think it's "cute" to watch them eating from our hands. Starvation is anything but cute!

you can go to walmart and pick up a bag of deer corn (it only comes in about a 20 lbs bag) but since deer seasons over then i doubt they will have it out.

Deer also like salt licks, which im sure you can pick up at the local feed store.(if you dont know what feed store is, its where farmers and people get food for cows, chickens, rabbits, horses, etc.) Just ask the person at the feed store what would be best for feeding the deer this time of year.

Don't feed them.
I know you really want to and you think it's the right thing to do, but once you start leaving food out they will become dependent on you. What will happen if you leave for a vacation or forget to put food out one day? What will happen when those lots start filling up and people move in? They won't like the deer everywhere and the neighborhood will probably drive them away.

Deer feed in the early morning hours and in the late afternoon. A deer's diet changes depending on its habitat and the season. It eats green plants in the spring and summer. In the fall, it eats corn, acorns and other nuts. In the winter, it eats the buds and twigs of woody plants.

Deer love sweet fruits like apples, crabapples and persimmons; they also like corn, acorns, soybeans, wheat and alfalfa

Cowpeas (e.g., iron and clay, catjang, and red ripper), American jointvetch, or lablab. These forages are high in protein content and deer love them.

Dear are grazing animals so much of their diet consists of grass. If you are feeding them because you are afraid they are not getting enough to eat you are most likely wrong. If, however, you want to attract them to your house so you can watch them feeding them some grains, like oats or going to your farm supply store and picking up some cattle feed would work. Dear also like apples in limited amounts. They are not likely to take food that has a strong human scent on it.

Hunters put out ear corn or cheap dropped apples to attract deer.

Encourage deer and forget about gardening to say
nothing about your shrubbery.

Deer eat plants and cereals. They love alfalfa and probably like hay too. This is a seed company that has plants seeds that deer like. The idea is that you plant these so deer come and eat it then you can shoot them. http://www.sunrichfarm.com/main.taf?cat=20
