they were originally bicycle builders who decided that they wanted to try to fly. they succeeded where other failed because they invented several things such as a wind tunnel to test their ideas, a cambered wing, and they allowed for the structure to be flexible enough so they could warp the wings to have directional control. after they were successful they sold their invention to the army and the flying community got bigger and bigger.
