Yes, if someone nearby. such as in an apartment complex, has a wifi switch and did not protect it with a password or lock it down with encryption keys, then anyone within range can use the wireless connection.

Normally, when you have a connection, such as a cable or DSL connection, you pay a fixed rate. If you connect a wireless router/switch to that connection and someone else shares that connection with or without your knowledge, you normally don't pay extra for that. But, someone who uses it, especially alot, could slow you down.

Wifi is really not worth it at this point. The best you can find in common use is 54 MB networks, which are slow. Occasionally, you might find a 108G MB network, but you have to have a 108 MB card to access it.

Still, for the mostpart, they are still somewhat slow and unreliable. And, if you have 2.4 gHz cordless telephones in your house, they will interfere, causing you to get "bumped" when the telephone rings or while talking on the telephone.

If you really want wireless, I would suggest to go to Sprint and get a cellular "Air Card". They use cellular technology to connect to the Internet anywhere there is connection available via cell towers. Unlimited access costs about $50 a month or so, some time plans are less. If you don't have a laptop, you can get a PCMCIA card reader that fits in a desktops empty drive bay or get an internal card.

WiFi = wireless

If you're near someone with a wireless, it is possible to connect to them - however most people have a password to allow people on their network (the smart ones anyway).

If your at a 'hot spot' - like at the airport, or some bookstores and some hotels - they allow you on their wireless for free. Some places, like McDonalds will charge you to access their wireless.

If you have wireless, you typically have a router - and by putting a password "in your router" through software, it means that others would not be able to access your network without the password. Some people don't put it passwords so they are able to access - and yes, they can see that you are on their system (if they look in the right places)
