I think more the latter. And I have been in love with my partner for 15+ years. When we met, we were both ready, willing, and able to love. The combination has been amazing and wonderful. That doesn't mean I wouldn't have fallen for someone else, and him too. But that is a very non-romantic idea, and when most people hear it they think it's not "real love". They have some "Precious Moments" view of love, which I find childish.

I had someone like that in my life once. I still love him to this day and I was well suited for him, but he didn't think so and he left. I never speak of him, so it's quite an event that I would make mention of him here.
He's now with a screaming alcoholic who cheats on him and treats him like garbage. I get no pleasure from that.
