Zak is mostly right, but I agree with the fellow above. It is possible to become rich by working for someone else. Also working for someone else can be a lot more than 40 hours and can pay a lot more than most small business entrepreneurs make. That's the making part. Since our income is more or less fixed in the short run, we must watch the spending side. Every penny saved is as good as a penny earned. So make those pennies and save those pennies, then it will feel like you made twice as many pennies you actually made. Save, save, save! And of course save them in a meaningful form, like mutual funds.

Depends on what you mean by rich. If you think a million dollars is rich, then get a good education, work hard, be frugal, and marry someone who does the same and barring illness or disaster you will end up worth a million or more. If you want hundreds of million or a billion you need to work where the money is (wall street) or own a successful business, or get really lucky with your investments.

Zak is wrong about one thing, some people do get rich working 40 hours a week -- just not abundantly wealthy. You can get modestly rich being in a well-paying profession, aggressively saving and investing, and being frugal. You'll be a millionaire eventually, piece of cake.

Now if you want to be a MULTI-millionaire while you're young enough to enjoy it, well then you need to develop some exceptional skills or be an entrepreneur. take some risks.
