I think Hot Mama's hubby was on the money about learning the shifting and such. I have been a driver for over 15 years. I have loved it and I have hated it, come off the road countless times only to go right back to it. It gets in your blood and never leaves!
The Training will indeed be a little nerve wracking, but is also necessary and invaluable.
Once you get past it, though, your senses are in for a workout, in that you still go through numerous learning sessions. There are a number of regulations that we have to deal with on a daily basis, extensive record keeping, and a lot of "hurry up and wait" with seemingly ridiculous demands on your time and sleep schedule. If you can deal with that and more, then you may already be a truck driver, lol... seriously, tho, there are a number of companies out there that offer "FREE" training, where they put you through school, then you spend several weeks with a "trainer" driving as a team. In return, you promise these companies to work for them for a year, or they back-charge you for the training. CHOOSE CAREFULLY. There are some bad deals out there. I think if I were to train today, I would go to Werner or US Express or even Schneider; Trailiner of springfield is a good company, too... but at any of these, you will be ggone for weeks at a time. Once you have a year under your belt, though, you can start to shop around for a job that gets you home every weekend or even a local job. Just don't underestimate or undersell yourself. Try it, and go for it until you're certain you either like it or not! Then you will never regret having NOT tried.

(My husband is answering your question on my account)

I'm 25 years old, and I've been a truck driver for four years now. If you like to drive and travel, it is a great job. The only problem is finding local jobs. (Which I have) The shifting and turning and backing becomes second nature after about three months of driving. It may very because I was truly what they would call a natural. So it came pretty easy for me, by the grace of God. Depending on your trainer, it can be hard. It's more nerve racking than anything. The key is, to stay calm and think about what you're doing.

Best job I ever had was driving a truck. Mind you this wasn't long haul thought. I was home every night, but being out on your own, with no one looking over your shoulder all day is a big plus. But I love driving and always saw new things every day.

Hours and hours of endless boredom interspersed with moments of stark terror. Remember there is 60,000 pounds of crap following you just waiting to kill you in a nano second. If you just "like trucks" consider a local operation like dump operators, paving contractors or concrete. lots of variety there - actually - rather than just pounding the freeway.
