Have examples if possible so I know what they are supposed to look like.

verb phrases are used to modify the verb infinitive. For example, "tengo ganas de ir a Mexico" (I'm want to go to Mexico) or "tengo que hablar con mi hermano" (I have to speak with my brother). The pattern is Verb Phrase + Infinitive + Objects. "tener ganas de..." and "tener que..." are verb phrases.

So, if you're talking about your childhood, the tense would be different, but the pattern is the same. For example, in describing how you wanted to be a doctor: "Cuando era nino, tenia muchas ganas de ser un medico." The verb phrase in there is "tenia muchas ganas de...." (I had a strong desire to...)
