Ever since joining yahoo questions a short week ago i have seen no end to the postings of complaining about the treatment of black people in america, demanding appologises for something that happen 2 centuries ago and other similar "questions" yet, noone stops to think where they would be today if it had not been for slavery.. Do you people seriously think you would have been better off if you ancestors had not been carted of to the US as slaves? Would you seriously rather be in Africa right now? So please do keep things in perspective and think of the millions starving to death in Ethiopia or the genocides in Rwanda before complaining about you current 'plight'. Instead of asking for appologies, maybe a simple 'Thank you' would be in order

The slave trade did not include only Africans. In fact the trade of Black Africans was at the tail end of the slave trade. Gold , silver and people were spoils of war. So
no one culture has ever been exempt from slavery. However, it is difficult to say what might have been. A little twist of fate is all it would require.

To this day slavery is alive and well. In may parts of Africa, women and children are sold by their own countrymen, for favor and profit. There are also many 'legitamate' agencies that will provide you with a mail order wife from Russia, Poland, Bulgaria, Phillipines etc. Other agencies promise a good life, and a job in a more wealthy nation, but in reality are sold to pimps and madams. Other agencies provide a sex vacation. Sex with children. Pity the unfortunate ones! How could you not?

We get the word 'slave' from the word Slav, (Slavic)...not the first slaves in the world. Certainly not the last.

My personal experience really opened my eyes to a few things, just recently.
When working in an urban hospital, I was given complaints made by Nigerian , Kenyan, Sengalese women, about the African Americans! They said that they, their African Amer. co-workers, complain far too much, and that they are lazy. "They complain to avert attention away from their laziness..they say that they suffered..how are they suffering..they do not know what suffering is". Of course they were not treated fairly, but neither are the people I mentioned earlier. I guess that even though some of their problems are unique to their culture, most of the problems they have others do too.

Also note that Black men were voting in this country for 50 years before women of any race including white.

I doubt the continent would have been in such bad shape had Europeans just minded their own business, really. Them staying could have made all the difference, and I doubt things would have been half as bad as they are now.

And no, I don't know why anyone would be grateful for the theft of their people, culture, language and traditions. They tried that with my people too (I'm Eastern Band Cherokee) but really didn't succeed, as many of us speak our language and know exactly where we came from.

Sure, I can explain what I mean if you like. There's strength in numbers. If there were simply too many people there to allow the takeover of their homelands, I doubt that would have happened. Instead, it was done very slowly and gradually by shipping people away. Because of what happened, we can only speculate on how things might have been had that not happened. It could have gone either way, just like any other part of the world. There's no way for anyone to know whether or not the Euros would have been able to do what you said if the circumstances had been different.

I have to add this: You're obviously not from the US, with the spelling you use and the term "new world" (hell, we've been here 10,000-plus years, nothing new to us!) There are many things people over there don't understand, and never will. It'll take much more study than you've done for you to get it.

Brava Danagasta.

And, I might add, because:

"americans" like you exist and supremacist americans at that. Pointing a finger when the other four are slapping you in the face. Talk about ignorance, greed, ungratefulness, attitude, Nazi Germany, Belgian genocide in the Congo, Belgian and French genocide in Rwanda, Afrikaner genocide and theft, Native American and South American Native American genocide and theft enriching you and yours for generations,....

Yeah, I got you a whooooole lot of "go back where you came from" talk bc all the rest of us would be sooo much better off--then and now.

Ungrateful?!? You must be on something dude! Yes they should be grateful for being kidnapped, having their families torn apart and their cultures destroyed not to mention the treatment they received as slaves. Yes it's all over and it's time to move on but being grateful for all that is a racist point of view and a stupid one. The only reason Africa is in the shape it's currently in is due to invasion and invasion and numerous countries kidnapping the populace. It could have been a whole different story if everyone had minded their own business and not expected to live on the backs of others.

In reality whites should be grateful! Because of slavery we were able to build up our nation much more quickly than we ever could have without slavery. Blacks went to war in every single war and got no recognition whatsoever. What's that about?! Once more the country was able to build itself on the backs of soldiers who fought and died alongside whites. Yeah they're so ungrateful! Read some history dude!

Thank you for your honesty. ( I am white by the way, allegedly).
Gets my dander up that us whities were carted off to North Africa in the seventeenth century in the hundreds of thousands and degraded by those damn Berbers. And I don't get any compensation for it. It's a totally unremarked upon scandal like the Irish Holocaust. Also Blacks have already been pleasantly compensated for it in the lunch box dept.
Also in reply to your addendum, could we not export all malcontents to Africa. I for one would enjoy a sojourn in the tropics as long as my basic needs plus some luxury were provided. I think certain African women are quite hot. And I like those wood carvings.

Thank you for hundreds of years of mistreatment, robbing them of dignity and humanity. The fact that the US may be better than Africa is irrelevent. If someone is forced to work for someone today for no pay (yes slavery still happens) or they could go back to whatever country the came from and get shot by their gangmaster, should they get down on their knees and kiss the feet of whoever is 'saving' them by working them so hard? Well why don't you make the Jews say thank you to Hitler for keeping them safe from the war in those concentration camps?

Africa is so screwed up as a direct result of the slave trade. Without slaves Europeans and Americans may well have viewed Africans as actual people instead of animals and not conquered their lands, raped and pillaged their way through hundreds of years of culture all in the name of profit and empire.

Sure, some people do play the race card a little too often - and it is impossible to undo the wrongs of our ancestors, but to make them say thank you for being abused? That's just twisted.

You should try actually going out and meeting black people in person, as opposed to forming an opinion based on an anonymous message board like this where probably 80% of the questions you mention are put out simply to offend or outrage people.

You're asking for black people to be thankful for slavery? That is easily the stupidest thing I've heard all day

Did you ever imagine that if the populations of African nations had not been devastated by slavery, the current nations in Africa might be more powerful?

Like you, I can't understand why black Americans can't be thankful for the fact that their ancestors had the privilege of being beaten with whips, maimed, having their families separated, couples forcibly broken up through being sold to different states, and having their children sold on them. Really, they should get on their knees and thank white America for the privilege!
Then after they were freed, they were given the privilege of letting the whites vote for them. They were allowed to have separate washrooms and eating places, and schools where they wouldn't have to learn such difficult stuff as the whites had to learn. They were so lucky! Black America, say thank you to your benefactors!
