Or, do they give you a card number that is valid to use "before" your actual debit card arrives in the two week period? Would this card number issued be all that I would have to provide if I was paying a company for their service? How does this work?

When you open a checking account they should give you "starter checks." These checks should pretty much be blank except for your account number at the bottom. Not all places will accept starter checks either and all banks may not give them to you when you open an account. You could try asking your bank if they will give you some if they didn't do so when you signed up. I have never heard of a bank giving you a temporary debit card number or anything like that though.

You will have to wait until your debit card or checks arrive. Often times the bank will give you an ATM card and starter checks.

The ATM card will allow you to withdrawl money from an ATM

the Starter checks are not accepted at most businesses but can be used to pay bills.

You will have to withdraw cash from the ATM until your debit card arrives... no big deal, should only be a week at most (it usually takes 3 days for Wells Fargo)

Additionally, you need to evaluate your use of quotation marks (" ") how you used them doesn't make sense.

You can call local banks to ask how quickly your debit card will be available after opening a new account. It's probably a matter of days - less than a week is what I'd expect. I'd be surprised if they issued a card on the spot.

they give you a temp check book with your account number but no name. So dont buy big stuff with your check. And i think you have to wait 1 week or 2 for your debit card.

You have to wait until your card comes. You cannot use it until you call a 1-800 number to activate it. Don't worry. It usually doesn't take the full two weeks for the card to arrive. They just say two weeks to cover themselves. Until then, just use checks.

You will be given checks (pieces of paper that you can write on with a pen to pay for purchases).

Otherwise, you will have to wait until the card comes and you activate it.

The instructions come with it. Even a caveman can do it.
