Just reading re importance (and impotence, if you take into account answer manipulation) of psychometric testing in job interviews and saw that question "do you ever pick your nose in private?" could be asked. Not being one who would do such a thing at the traffic lights, unlike your average 17-95 year old male, I am getting a prickly heat rash already at the thought of this being sprung on me sometime. Being averse to answering this question directly, I would point out that I am one of those who freezes and blushes when the mall security staff face anywhere within my peripheral vision and so would greatly appreciate if exploring your snotbox....I...I mean proboscis!...has any unwarrented connotations.

I am a therapist, and I have administered many tests (such as the MMPI-2) that ask seemingly bizarre questions such as this. With questions such as these, a single person's answer is insignificant--that is, nothing can be gleaned from it. However, if we take this question and give to many varied groups of people (e.g., psychologically healthy vs. mentally ill), we may find that the question has discriminative properties--for example, people who are psychologically healthy typically answer this question as "no", while those who are mentally ill answer as "yes" (I doubt this is true, by the way!) Gather enough of these discriminative questions, and you have a psychological test!
I would guess the specific purpose of this question, judging by the wording, would be to see if you're trying to present an "overly positive" picture of yourself to the test administrator--put more simply--to see if you're lying. Most people do pick their noses in private, and to deny this may actually hurt your "honesty" score on this test! How about that--admitting to picking your nose could actually help you score a job!

I thought you'd removed this question... If you said you didn't pick your nose, they 'd assume you were lying. If you said you did, they'd think you had no pride in yourself to admit to such a thing,so it's a no win situation.
