Dropsy is a sign on several different potential diseases. The main thing to remember is that is very rarely will pass from fish to fish unless the sick fish dies in the tank and the other fish feed on him. You have removed the sick fish and this is the best thing to prevent the spread of the disease. The only thing you can really do to be SURE it's not going to spread is to treat the tank with a broad spectum antibiotic but since this causes such trouble in the tank, I wouldn't do this unless you see signs of a disease.

Dropsy is a result of something else. Dropsy itself is not contageous but the pathogen that caused it can be. Dropsy is caused by kidney failure and the excess fluid buildup in the body cavity. It is always fatal and at this point I have not ever been convinced of a cure. Euthanise any fish with full blown dropsy. Watch the other fish closely. Make sure water perameters are perfect. Get a heater and keep the temp a stable 77 degrees.

There is wide spectulation as to what dropsy actually is. It is mostly accepted that dropsy is not a disease, but rather a symptom of a disease, and that it is an internal infection that causes the fish's kidneys to basically shut down (hence, the associated swelling). In my experience raising bettas, dropsy is a chance thing and I have seen no signs of it being passed from fish to fish (knock on wood, as I don't joke around when it comes to dropsy). I would use SCALDING hot water to clean everything that your dropsy fish touched though, just in case. Good luck.

ok, so betta fish are "labyrinth" fish. they arrive from oxygen undesirable rice paddys in S.E. Asia. I doubt oxygen is an element right here, pondering betta's can gulp air to breathe. undesirable water nice and too low a temperature is larger in all possibility. the distinct element you dont communicate about is what you're feeding, the betta does no longer eat the plant!! They love rich meaty nutrients like blood worms, and want a protein rich weight help plan. So do a partial water replace, utilising dechlorinated water, making certain that is on a similar temp because of the very truth the water he's in, ascertain that the water is kept at round 76F, you're in a position to wish a small heater, and ascertain you're feeding him mind-blowing.

I've had problems like this before. Petsmart sells treatments for dropsy & sev. other diseases. Brand name Jungle, tank buddies. They're like alka selzer. You drop the specified number of tabs, according to tank size in & they fizz. Depending on which one you use, it may stay clear, or the water will turn blue or green. The fish (all of them) stay in this for up to sev. days, then you change out the water. I've had success with this & have saved a few fish.
