Because younger people hear older people cussing and think it's "cool" or mature, so they pick it up. And it's a vicious cycle of stupidity.

I have a terrible potty mouth and I hate it! I dont think its cool at all. Ive sincerely tried to stop and always lost it. Its a very bad habit that I wish I could shake.

I don't find it cool, it's just a really bad habit of mine. I tried to stop, but when I once swore in a church, I knew I was a lost cause.

I've wondered that myself; it doesn't make you sound smart, but then, intelligence isn't highly prized these days. Intelligent people are termed, "geeks". Sad, isn't it?
