I am visiting friends in Manistee, MI and was planning on flying in to Traverse City. We were wondering if it would be practical to travel to Chicago and drive to Manistee or if there was a ferry boat. I dont necessarily want to drive for 6 hours with an 18 month old to places that I've never been before. But then do I want to travel on a boat for that matter, alone with an 18 month old? Any suggestions?

There are two ferries from Wisconson to Michigan. Routes that wouldn't well work for you. One Ferry is Manitowoc, WI to Ludington, MI. It's quite expensive really and the trip from Chicago to Manitowac, WI is quite a drive too. But Ludington, MI isn't that far from Manistee.

I have been in both towns many times, (Manistee and Traverse City) so I know that area well. it is cheaper tro fly into Chicago, but by the time factor in your time, a rental car, it doesn't save you that much. Traverse City is a really small airport. Check out airline prices for both Muskegon, MI and Grand Rapids, MI -- Grand Rapids would be about two hours from Manistee, if your good with a map. Muskegon, is just a little less time to Manistee. But Grand Rapids is a little bigger and handles more connecting flights

My experience is that it costs alot more to fly into Traverse City than Grand Rapids, MI Good luck and have a good trip.

Roxy "babe" is obviously an idiot. I live in Chicago and I've often wondered why there aren't small boat companies that won't just take you to various stops along Lake Michigan. I would rather spend a few days on a boat in a warm cabin with meals on board than shuffle through crowded airports or drive! Then, once arriving to a port of choice, get off and rent a car. Then do the same on the way back. How cool would that be?!
