The only kind of hover we will get in our lifetime may be like the rail systems that use opposing magnets to provide the lift. Don't expect 'Back to the Future' type hovering.
What kind of enegry would have to be used to float a vehicle weighing as much as a DeLorian? Where as opposing magnets actually reduce the energy needed to move a vehicle by virtually eliminating the effects of gravity and friction!

Why do you say that hover cars would make commuting and living better? There are several technologies out there, and a few working prototypes, but the fact is that hover cars just aren't feasible. There's not much reason for anyone to back this kind of technology, because it's really not an improvement, and it's not necessary. Hover cars sound cool and all, but why would you need one, and do you really think that the majority would ever be willing to pay 10x more for a car just because it doesn't have wheels? A hover car would not only burn way more fuel even when stationary, but it would also be a huge step backward as far as acceleration, braking ability, turning stability and overall safety. It's just not a good idea at the moment.

This is bigger than the car technology. Airspace is regulated so that anyone with a hovercar will also have to be a pilot. Today there are three entry-level powered flight licensees (Sport, Recreation and VFR) plus glider, helicopter, and lighter-than-air.
Take a flying lesson at your local airport for >$50 and have a great day!

Not in ur life time. Driving that is same as piloting a Helicopter, you think everyone that have driver's liscense now which took them at most 2 month of effort can pilot a Helicopter properly in another half yr of training??
Besides, will you be able to afford the gas/energy consumption of a helicopter?
