Yes, it matters. Knowing the slot type or "package" of your CPU is one important factor in identifying what type of motherboard you'll buy, and vice versa. You can't just fit any processor in your computer because CPU's have different brands and models. Intel Core 2 Duo is different from Intel Pentium D 805. AMD Athlon XP is different from AMD Athlon 64 FX or AMD Athlon 64 X2. I'm sure you understand what I mean.

If you have Windows installed, you can download a FREE program called CPU-Z from www.cpuid.com. The program will not just tell what you have, it will also tell the Name of the processor, the volage, the core speed, multiplier, bus speed, and many more. Add to that, it will also tell what kind of motherboard you have and the memory modules installed on it.

You'll need to know what motherboard your computer has.

Download and run BELARC, it will tell you the motherboard Name\Number. Then go to the motherboard's manufacturer's website and look for the manual.

The manual will not only tell you the Slot Type it should tell you the fastest CPU the motherboard supports/

Usually look at the manual that comes with or is titled for your Mother Board.

the easiest way is to figure out which mobo you have and go only and search your going to look for something like socket 779 (that's almost universal for intel)
