Being handy is something you take interest in. Most women don't do the handy stuff because society says men should do it. Usually, fixing some things, like cars, require elbow grease (strength) and getting messy. I don't know too many women who are stronger than men and likes to get dirty. There's a bunch of reasons why guys end up fixing things around the house and cars.

I'd say it's a cultural thing. Women in our society are generally taught how to do indoor things, like cooking, cleaning, laundry, etc. Men are taught by their fathers how to fix cars, fix machinery, fix plumbing, etc. Plus, men are more likely than women to take a basic woodshop or metalworks course in high school. I know several girls though who can fix a car. I am a bit of a feminist but I will be the first to admit that I have no clue how a car really works. Also, men like to feel like they're handy and know how to do things like, that...I suspect it's part of the whole "macho" thing.

Guys play with cars and tools when they're kids, they learn things that way. Others are just to proud and stuborn so if they don't know how to fix it themselves they'll look up how and learn how.
Alot of the girls I know had no interest in cars growing up, how they worked, or how to fix them. When something's broken, if they don't know how to fix it, they aren't afraid to ask somebody that might know how, so they don't learn how to do it themselves.
I think alot of it has to do with pride. A man would rather take 12 hours to install a sink where as a woman would call someone to do it in 25 minuets.

you have to want to try to fix things and just think about it before you try. I being a girl has put on a radiator, starter, water pump Exhaust heater core, alternator helped change a engine while four months pregnant. Oh also a muffler from front to back. I use to be by my father and took interest in cars and he was not a mechanic just safed our family money. More so on outside repairs then inside.

Likely because he saw some people working on various things and probably helped out. Maybe he took a shop class in high school.
Most women don't know how to fix things because they never been taught....nor have they watched anyone fix things or taken a shop class (technology education) in high school.

most girls dont know how to fix things becuz they think only men should know how to fix things and all they, the girls, have to do is stand around and look pretty. i am a girl and honestly, in my house, i am the only person who fixes things. Word. i guess most girls are just stuck on the stereotype people have of girls only looking pretty and not knowing how to tighten a lightbulb.

Men are just naturally mechanically inclined, it was passed for the most part, from watching their fathers, its just something we do, we like to be the fixers in the family, no matter what the problems are. Its pretty much in our make up, constant thinkers about how to solve peoblems. Good luck.

what it is, is guys are trained to fix stuff. (manual labor) whereas girls are generally trained to do inside things. trust me, if the girl spends most of her time mechanicing on machinery. then she will know how to fix stuff, just as well (sometimes better) as the man. its not generic

Why should we? that's what they are for. Most of us don't because it's not really a part of our growing up,it may be in our genes I don't know but think about it,when we are growing up we play with dolls, make up,clothes. Most boys play with cars, toy tools, they tend to imitate their fathers,us girls imitate our mothers so it's probably a cultural thing.
