If 2 grams of element x combined with 4 grams of element y to form compound xy, how many grams of element y would combine with 12 grams of x to form the same coumpound?

This is also a math question...with ratios.

2x +4y = xy

So, a ratio of 2:4

How many grams with x to form the same compound?

2x / 4y is the same as 12x / ???

You simply forget about the x's and y's for a moment...

2/4 is the same as 12 / 24.

So, you'll need 24y.
