Research, Is the best tool. Start Small, Be careful if you are going for a grant. Most of the on line ones are Fake Site's That want your information. I have two boys and my wife is currently pregnant. Hopefully it is a girl :). Anyways, when I Stayed home, While my wife worked. I opened an eBay store in my home. For about 2 hours a day. I made about 1,000 a month. I Did an hour of research, then the rest of the time I was on EBay. If I would have spent more time, I Would have more. Results may vary.

I am not sure what you mean by "snack shack"
Personally, I think food service is entirely too difficult. There are so many federal and local guidelines and health code things you have to be aware of at all time. Plus, you can be sued for using certain ingredients without premission from distributers... I've never personally known a restraunt entrepenuer who did well.
I think, if you are a good salesperson, you should sell Mary Kay. It's quite time consuming and pretty hard work, but if you're good at it, you can become a millionaire (not kidding, I know of several) - at the very least you could earn the right to drive a pretty car for free!
Just my suggestion. Whatever you chose, good luck to you!

Just start and keep going is good.
Since you will be preparing food in your home kitchen, you will need to have your kitchen inspected by the health department.
This may cause you to make some very costly upgrades to meet their codes.
Marketing means getting the word out. Flyers are a starter and go from there.

1st you should do a little yard sale to get some reputation and then like if u have a garage and have a drive way paint it and turn that to a little gift shop if its big enough and then if you don't use your drive way add to your garage and cover the drive way so you can have more room and open a bigger business but i guess the money you spend to add to the garage is worth it.ITS 4 YOUR CHILDREN!!!!lol

Try http://www.naducenter.com
They offer a good step-by-step to owning your own home-based business. In fact you can even sell whatever you want using their guidelines. They also show you how you can receive payments online. So it's kinda Virtual Vending Machine! Hehehe...
