What is "Hypoechogenecity"?

Question

Well,This word is written on paper made by radiologist who made an ultrasound scan for my pregnant wife.

although I'm a pharmacist,I failed to understand from the doctor what exactly is that word.

The sentence-as written on paper- as follow:"There is very thin rim of hypoechogenecity in lower part of subchorionic area".

I'm not able to find it over the web.Plz Gyn,Obs. help

I only came to the conclusion that I should look up the word without the hypo- in front of it after reading a completely unrelated article. It is my assumption that it may not really be a word. It is not in any online dictionary or encyclopedia, even specifically a medical encyclopedia. However, in medicine, the prefix hypo occurs in terms denoting an abnormally low level of a certain substance in the body.
Here is what I found on echogenecity:

An enlarged uterus with mixed echogenecity implies either a fibroid, which is a non-cancerous tumour of the uterus, or an adenomyosis where the lining of the uterus grows into the muscular wall of the uterus. If this gives unbearable pain or bleeding during the period or if it is a cause of infertility, only then does it need treatment. Only a detailed evaluation of the ultrasound can help us decide if this is against achieving a pregnancy.

Hypo Echo Genicity = Region that generates a lower than normal signal on an ultrasound.

Basically a darker spot on the image - means either that whatever's there doesn't reflect sound as well, or that there's nothing there. Suggests something anatomically different in that region. As to what it is, depends on multiple issues, such as how many weeks pregnant your wife is. Ask your doc what it's about.

I'm an RPH also, and I've never heard the term. It MIGHT mean that they are not able to determine the sex of the child yet judging the choice of prefixes.
