"Here is wisdom. Let he who has understanding calculate the number of the Beast; for his number is that of a man; and his number is 666". Rev:13:18
Rev.13:18, the last verse of the chapter, says that the number of the Antichrist is that of a man, and his number is 666... and the verse challenge us to have wisdom to calculate the number of he Beast!.

The author wrote Revelations on the rather over-heated idea that Nero, who had persecuted the Christians was not really dead (rather like Elvis) and, given the nature of the Roman government of that time, had to be rather cryptic about the whole business. There was a bizarre "numerological" structure that linked Nero with 666, and so John encoded his fears in that number.
Nero never returned, obviously, but the book or Revelations remained, and generation after generation of Christians, those who find solace in paranoia, interpreted the business as prophetic of the end of the world, with "the Beast" being the devil.

The number 666 is related to the devil because the antichrist is supposed to be born on the 6th hour of the 6th day in the 6th month

People think it's linked to the devil but I don't think anywhere in the bible it says that it is. Just like the bible dosen't say that there are levels in hell. Though I could be wrong...
