I wasn't worried about eating or going to the pub by myself at first but now I've started reading more books that say women might find themselves uncomfortable in pubs if alone. Not sure why...

Rubbish.

I'm a woman and live in London. You'll be fine my love. Men in london have been to school and most have been brought up with a mother, if a bloke tries to talk to you and you dont want him to then you just tell him and he will apologise and go. If he doesnt leave you alone (which has NEVER happened to me after I've made it clear I'm not interested) then you speak to the barstaff or doorman and they get rid of them for you. You are safe in a pub and in a restaurant. Just make sure you know how to get home and take the usual safety measures when you're out.

People wont whisper or stare, I've seen many stranger things in london than a woman on her own. This IS 2007, women are allowed out on their own now and are allowed to eat in a restaurant or drink in a pub without a man. Loads of women come to London on business so the sight is not rare.

Most pubs have a lot of women in so you should be fine, and most groups are welcoming to a new member for the evening so introduce yourself, explain your situation and grab a chair.

Good luck and really, dont worry you'll have a great time.

Considering that you want to go drinking by yourself...think of what that looks like to the guys in the pub? If that is really what you want to do, don't do it after dinner but before and you should be fine. You still need to keep your wits about you.

London is a great city to visit, you will have fun. Just keep in mind that it is still a large city with large city problems...even if it is London.

Why are you traveling alone?

Some people feel exactly the way you do at this point. When I went to Spain a year ago I found it was much nicer to dine alone and to do everything alone because you can enjoy it better. Some people have the opinion that if you are with someone you enjoy it more but think of how much you can think about and enjoy the food if you aren't talking to anyone every five seconds. In my opinion I think you shouldn't worry about it and just enjoy yourself.

It should be fine during the day/ afternooon and maybe early evening.

It also obviously depends on the kind of place and location you go - a very busy bar at 10pm may make you feel out of place, whereas eating in a cafe, pizza place, 'lunchtime' type of restaurant' or sitting in a city bar/ pub reading your paper or book or just staring out of window will be totally normal.

yes you will! people will stare at you and whisper about you...women do not eat alone nor go to pubs alone...not in the UK, not in London, not in 2007...makes no sense but it is just the way it is!
