yes you can, but alternatively why not simply increase the number of USB ports with a hub?? Works a bit like a training socket, you plug it in and it gives you 3 more sockets. You can get them from £1!

yes you can still buy serial port optical mice, but as said before most are USB powered.... You can buy a converter that goes from USB - Serial, but I don't know why you would.
You would do better with a 4 hub port that allows you to connect it to 1 usb port but it gives you 4 more extra ones..... I do. The extra port costs about £5 - £8. and then get a USB mouse....
It is far better to be optical; than a 'ball' one less problems!

There are adapters that can turn a usb connection into a PS/2 connection (small, circular connection). These usually come with a USB mouse. If you do indeed have a serial connection, while it is old you can get a PS/2 - serial adapter. Granted it would be a long connection, but if you really are using a serial connection (flat with pins) you should consider getting a newer computer anyway.

Yup as mentioned above get a hub. Very cheap. The alternative is a 'reverse' adapter from USB to the old connection (PS2?).
Anyway, a hub will usually have four connections and its a case of plug in and off you go with no software etc required to use it. They tend to be the size of a credit card and as thick as a USB port so no space issues either!

I'm sure that there are optical mice that use the PS2 or serial ports, but why not get a 4 way USB expander hub. It plugs into one USB port and you can plug up to 4 USB devices into it. It is self powered from its own USB port.

serial is REAL old maybe if you have a x84 pc you can use a serial mouse, but since you talk about USB, i think you mean PS2 ports. (always makes me think its to connect PC's to playstations)
There shouldn't be any problem buying those, otherwise you can buy a USB splitter (to give you more USB ports) or a new USB card, they are easy to insert in your PC, or just take your PC to a shop, probably they will fix it for you (as service)
Good luck!
