If one does internal citations, you need to put the citation in parentheses like this.

Every human has three eyes (Mercola, 57).

The number indicates the page number, the word indicates the first word in the formal citation, usually the authors last name. Remember to put the period on the otside of the citation.

If there are two citations by the same author or have the same first word in the formal citation, you put as many words as needed to indicate the specific source. For example, i have two sources by Tom Wellington. One book is called Pie is Good. The other is called Brainfreezes Hurt like a Mother.

Pie is made with dough (Wellington Pie, 33). Brainfreezes really hurt (Wellington Brainfreezes, 193).

If an internet source is used, make this:

Cotton candy is fluffy sugar (Peterman, online).

If you are not using internal citiations, then make a reference list. If it is a scientific or mathematic paper, use APA style, if it is an English or History paper, use MLA style. You can find these formats here

You should always cite sources. If you don't it's possible that you may be accused of plagiarism (stealing material from someone else). It's perfectly acceptable to quote material from someone else's work, as long as you identify the source(s) in your paper.

Sources can be cited at the bottom of the page on which it is used, or they can be listed together at the end of the paper.
