Hypnotherapy works by soothing the person into a state of deep relaxation that greatly resembles meditation. In this state, you are open to suggestions and can passively recall memories that you may usually be too guarded to pay attention to. One can only be hypnotized if he is not opposed to being hypnotized, though, because otherwise, you're too on guard to relax into the hypnotic state.

it works if you believe it can work. this goes for every method of therapy.
and no, it's not dangerous when done by a psychologist who knows what is doing.
the modern scientific experiments are based on two theories: the classic one and the cognitive-bhavioral one. for the first one read Hilgard, Erickson, Spiegel and for the second read Barber, Spanos, Wagstaff.
i don't know how much you can find on the web, but you can email me for more informations

All therapies really do work. All have about the same rate of efficiency. What is really important, is for the client to believe in it and for the therapist to create a therapeutic alliance.

Answer: Just because so many people have stated that it worked / helps them, that doesn't mean it doesn't work and there is no evidence.
I'm curious as to what would constitute 'evidence' anyway?
