During the day, the sun warms the land faster than the water. So the air above the land is warmed and then rises because warm air is less dense. The cool air from over the water flows in to replace it and you have a sea breeze.
At night the water holds its heat longer so the air above it is warmer and rises, then the cooler air from over the land flows out to replace the air that rose. That is the land breeze.

Good question and here is the scientific answer - During the day land heats up faster than the water. The air over the land warms and rises creating low pressure. Cool air from the water than blows in under the warm air. This is called a sea breeze because it comes in from the sea during the day, generally in the afternoon when the land has reached its max heating.

At night the land cools faster than the water. A reverse process is established and a land breeze forms with a breeze from land to sea. Cooler air always has a higher pressure. This land and sea breeze phenomena is not a deep layer phenomena and is only perhaps a 1 km or less deep.

A sea-breeze (or onshore breeze) is a wind from the sea that develops over land near coasts. It is formed by increasing temperature differences between the land and water which create a pressure minimum over the land due to its relative warmth and forces higher pressure, cooler air from the sea to move inland.

the moon (lunar forces) cause the waves in the ocean, due to gravity and what not. you can look all this up on the internet in alot greater detail. but it is the moon.
