I know Mt Everest is just over 29,000ft above sea level, but I'm interested in finding out what the highest mountains are from their base ... then we'll see what the tallest mountains really are!

Mount Everest is part of a mountain range so all it really is the tallest bit of lots of other very tall bits of land.

The tallest 'free standing' mountain is Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. It is 5,895m (19,340 ft) tall: that is from base to top. It is jungle at the base but snowy at the top.

If measured from their bases and not sea level..K2 is taller than Everest.

The base camp is at around 18,000 feet, so that's another 11,000 feet to climb to get to the top.
