women chewed ivy, laurel and drank wine while dancing and singing in celebration of the Greek God of fertility and wine....Dionysus. I think it was to give them a "night out" to put it in modern terms and a break from the everyday stringent regiment of a strict existence. I also heard that the Margi Gras has it's roots in this "celebration" of dance.
