You should be off work for at LEAST two weeks. More if you are in an active job position that does a lot of pulling and lifting.

Do what your doctor recommends, He or she knows what they are doing.

If you can't get medical leave at least take off two weeks of work. You do not want to cause problems with your surgery recovery.

I would think that you would have to discuss this with your human resources person or manager. Depending on what your situation I would think that there would have been some paper work that should have been filled out by you and your physician. There is something called FMLA or Family Medical Leave but not all employers are required to offer it.Family medical leave is not available for every surgery or illness. There are many variables and it would be best to speak with someone at your work specifically as they know what they are required to do. It might be in your best interest to cancel your surgery and find out the information that you need to know about medical leave prior to your surgery. Although FMLA is a federal law it is 12 weeks of unpaid leave, you would know if you have short term disablity insurance. Usually this is something that you need to have prior approval for, you don't just spring it on them. I would get everything together and check before I took at the minimum of 6 weeks off most likely unpaid.
